Caran d' Ache Athens 2004 Return to the Roots Silver Limited Edition Fountain Pen

This spectacular fountain pen is part of the "Return to the Roots" collection, and was released in 2004 to coincide with the Olympic Games held in Athens, Greece in the summer of 2004.

The name of the collection refers to the return of the Olympic Games to Greece, the country that hosted the games in antiquity, and also the country at which the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896.

The sterling silver edition was released in just 108 numbered fountain pens, a number reflecting the number of years seperating the first modern Olympic Games and 2004, the year the Olympic Games returned to Athens.

The cap of the fountain pen is made of cast sterling silver, and features a three-dimensional stylized copy of the medals given to the winners of the 1896 Olympic Games. The imagery of the cap includes the Acropolis of Athens, and the inscriptions "International Olympic Games" and "In Athens 1896" - both of course in Greek. At the top of the fountain pen's cap an olive wrath can be seen, a well known symbol of glory that was given to the winners of the Olympic Games in antiquity. The barrel of the pen is made of wood.

An 18kt gold nib with the logo and name of the licensee tasked with the production of this series was selected for this pen. Interestingly, the pens were only manufactured with Broad nibs, as they were meant to be signature pens. Ink supply is handled by a standard cartridge/converter system.

Each of the Return to the Roots fountain pens comes in a luxurious wooden giftbox decorated with the insignia of the Athens 2004 Olympics. In the box the owners will find a booklet detailing the edition, and a plaque of authenticity that on one of its sides has imprinted the details of the original 1896 medal.

This is a truly rare and precious edition.
