Pilot Sakura Fubuki Maki-e Fountain Pen

This Pilot Sakura Fubuki maki-e fountain pen was released in approximately 1990 (based on its nib's production code) and presents a flurry of falling cherry blossoms in full bloom like a blizzard.

The Cherry Blossom carries high symbolism in the Japanese culture, as it represents both life and death, both beauty and violence. The Cherry Blossoms represent the vitality and vibrancy of the spring, but, simultaneously, their short lifespan is a reminder that life is fleeting.

The technique used on this beautiful fountain pen is Hira Maki-e (flat), in the application of which the design is created using colored urushi and raw lacquer. It is then entirely coated with silver and gold powder. After drying, several layers of urushi are applied, and when those too have hardened, the pen is highly polished to achieve a deep, lustrus shine.

The Pilot Sakura Fubuki fountain pen has a 14kt gold nib (size No.10), and a cartridge/converter filling system. It comes in a luxurious gift box, along with a bottle of ink.

The Sakura Fubuki design is no longer in production, but was historically available in two executions on the Pilot FK models (similar to the one listed here), as well as on the Pilot Elite and Pilot Deluxe models. The fountain pen listed here is new old stock, and comes with its full set of a period-correct box and accompanying ink bottle.
